Going vegan does not mean you need to give up on comfort food. With two locations in the Upper West Side and Union Square, the Peacefood cafe was named after the idea that peace begins on your plate. This vegan café-restaurant offers a diverse menu of healthy and not-so-healthy vegan delights including delicious chickpea fries, a roasted japanese pumpkin sandwich, and seasonal vegetable pizza. Make sure to save room for dessert and try the strawberry shortcake or tiramisu.
Proud new owner of a Michelin Star, Nix, located in Greenwich Village, was founded by Chefs John Fraser and James Truman. With the belief that "eating vegetarian or vegan should feel more celebration than sacrifice," Nix features dishes that are seasonal, shareable and highly flavorful. The menu plays with Asian and European flavors that create delicious surprises. We recommend trying the Cauliflower tempura and the Shredded kale. Highly addictive!
If you are new to veganism, The Butcher’s Daughter should be your first stop. Most of the people who dine here are not vegans or even vegetarians - that’s how good the food is. The Butcher’s Daughter is a plant-based restaurant, cafe, juice bar and “vegetable slaughterhouse." With two locations in Manhattan and one in Brooklyn, they serve breakfast, lunch, dinner and weekend brunch. If you don’t make a reservation, be prepared to wait, the place gets packed during lunch and brunch times. Their menu is 100% vegetarian, and mostly vegan and gluten-free. The Butcher’s Daughter is also committed to buying produce from local and organic farms and design their menus “with the season.” Each month brings new produce highlighted in special dishes, juices and cocktails.
Le Botaniste is the brainchild of Alain Coumont, the creative force behind Le Pain Quotidien. This plant-based organic food and wine bar opened in 2016 and now has 2 locations in Manhattan. The restaurant serves delicious healthy, organic and very affordable vegan and seasonal food. We particularly love their warm bowl selection such as the Tibetan Mama Rice Bowl (Coconut curry peanut butter sauce served over brown rice with steamed vegetables and kimchi) or the Dirty Noodle Soup (Miso broth served over gluten free noodles, free-range tofu, leeks and seaweeds). If you find yourself missing cheese, stop by in the evening, to enjoy a glass of natural wine with a vegan cheese plate. Comforting and delicious!
The name says it all. This Lower East Side spot is our go-to for vegan Chinese. They even have vegan sushi on the menu! And, just like your go to local joint, this place is cheap - $7.50 for a lunch special which comes with soup, a spring roll, rice, and main dish. Who said vegan food had to be expensive? Our go to order is the veg pork bun, fried crispy veg duck, and sesame veg chicken.
Avant Garden serves plants in their most natural form, seasoned to perfection. Chef Gaz Oakley knows how to make vegetables the star of a meal. Go with a group and order a bunch of dishes to share - literally, everything on the menu is memorable. The owners of this restaurant also operate Lady Bird known for their vegan fondue, and Mother of Pearl with Asian Fusion tapas.
